ABOUT KVPY

The "Kishore VaigyanikProtsahanYojana" (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences to take up research careers in Science. The Department of Science and Technology has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue career in research. This program aims to assist the students to realise their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided up to the pre-Ph.D. level to the selected KVPY Fellows.

ELIGIBILITY

The KVPY Fellowships are given only to Indian Nationals to Study in India(OCI and PIO’s are not eligible). KVPY does not allow its Fellows to receive simultaneously fellowship /scholarship from more than one source, either government or private. In case they are in receipt of any other fellowship or scholarship, they will have to relinquish it in order to avail the KVPY Fellowship.

Stream SA : Students enrolled in XI Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year 2013-14 and having secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination. The students under this stream will be mentored for one year. Their fellowship will be activated when they enroll in an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) after XII Standard(+2) securing a minimum of 60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) mark or equivalent grade. During the mentoring period of one year, they will be invited for Regional Science Camp/National Science Camp.

Stream SB : Students enrolled in the 1st year of undergraduate program in Basic Sciences PCMB during the academic year 2013–14 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/ PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (PCBM) in the XII Standard Board Exams. In the 1st year final examination of undergraduate program they must secure 60%(50% for SC/ST/ PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Stream SX : Students enrolled in XII Standard/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2013–14 and aspiring to join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences PCMB for the session 2014–15 provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board Examination. They must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Olympiad

Students who represent India in the International Olympiads Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Mathematics / Informatics and Astronomy will automatically qualify for KVPY Fellowship.

Empowerment initiative in the KVPY Fellowship Program:

  • A certain number of additional fellowships exclusively for the students belonging to SC/ST community under the various streams as stated above will be operated. A special orientation program for the selected SC/ST students will be organized.
  • A certain number of fellowships under various streams as stated above will be operated exclusively for students under the category of Persons With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged).

Admission to IISERs

KVPY Fellows will automatically be eligible for direct admission to the five-year Integrated M.S. Programme conducted by Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER). Interested Students may visit the IISER Websites: http://www.iiserkol.ac.in or http://www.iiserpune.ac.in

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Aptitude Test : After scrutiny of application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, all eligible students will be called for a written aptitude test conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country on Sunday, the 27th October 2013. The details of the venue of the aptitude test for the eligible students and their seat number will be published in the KVPY website during the first week of October 2013.

Admit Card :

  • Students who have applied online may download the admit card for the aptitude test from the website from the second week of October 2013.
  • For students who have applied with a hard copy, admit card will be sent by speed post.

Interview : Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students will be asked to appear for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

SYLLABUS

There is no prescribed syllabus for the written exam. The written exam aims to test the understanding and analytical ability of the student than his/her factual knowledge. However, students are tested for the syllabus up to class X/XII/1styr B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. as applicable.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Each Stream has its own application form.
  • Students may apply either by hard copy or Online (http://www.kvpy.org.in/).
  • A hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request on a plain paper enclosing the paid “Bank Challan/ Pay-in-slip” (available at: http://www.kvpy.org.in/), clearly indicating the stream SA/SX/SB on the envelope.
  • APPLICATION FEE: An application fee of Rs. 500/- may be remitted at any core banking branch of the STATE BANK OF INDIA to the credit of “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) A/c. No. 10270577392”
  • The Application fee is exempted for the following category of students:
    • Students belonging to SC/ST community
    • Students With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged Students)
  • The completed application form along with the following documents, superscribing on the envelope the stream applied for, should reach the KVPYoffice on or before 02/09/2013.
    • Caste certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed proforma in the case of SC/ST students.
    • Medical certificate from the prescribed authority in case of Persons With Disability (physically and visually challenged students) certifying the percentage of disability.
    • Copy of the marks/grade statement of the previous qualifying examination(s).
    • The original Pay-in-slip of Rs. 500/- if applicable..
